Schlick and Zurich enjoy greatest popularity
Auction review LHS 103
Every single piece sold, all lots knocked down at a price higher than the estimate, the Bohemian county of Schlick is high in collectors’ favor. And Zurich did not fall behind: The magnificent heavy gold coins realized exceptional prices. Just one example: the outstanding donativum of Louis XIV of France, which was handed to the members of the Swiss delegation in 1663, estimated at 25.000 Swiss Francs sold for 48.300 Swiss Francs*.
The final total summed up to 2.01 Mio. (estimate: 1.4 Mio.).
There were also spectacular results for eminent Greek coins: The perfect archaic stater from Sybaris coming from the Kunstfreund collection realized 64.400 Swiss Francs (estimate: 40.000 CHF). An early classical stater from Corinth featuring a charming little head of Athena cost four times its estimate (estimate: 4.500 / final price: 18.400 CHF).
A collection of coins from Trier demonstrated that the collectors’ market for German coins is sound. We just could state a certain caution concerning the high price range. This retention did not affect coins and medals from the Holy Roman Empire, especially a small collection of coins from the county of Schlick. Here we noticed, that the amateurs of Bohemian coins are willing to pay good prices. Every single piece sold. All lots were knocked down at a price higher than the estimate. The total estimate came up to 60.000 Swiss Francs, the final result to 102.350 Swiss Franks.
The tone among Swiss collectors is very good: The 183 lots estimated at 751.000 Swiss Francs realized a round million. Especially the magnificent heavy gold coins from Zurich raised great interest and sold for high prices. Here are some examples: A 10 ducat piece of 1559 struck from the dies of the “Schnabeltaler” (estimate: 50.000 / final price: 79.350 CHF) and the outstanding donativum of Louis XIV, which was handed to the members of the Swiss delegation in 1663 (estimate: 25.000 / final price: 48.300 CHF).
